Bill and Carol Fox, Mpumulanga South Africa
For the love of a leopard … Bill and Carol Fox track their first leopard. Read More
Bill and Carol Fox have taken the remarkable decision to leave the safety and comfort of their jobs and home in Dorset in the United Kingdom and embark on an exciting new adventure. With the blessing of their Daughter (currently studying Medicine at University), they plan to leave the UK to go to South Africa in April of this year and work as volunteer researchers with Gerrie Comacho (Lydenburg Zoological Researcher and expert on lions and leopards) and the Mpumalanga Parks Board on the Ingwe / Black Leopard Project.
The aim of the project is to create a substantial database on the numbers and migrations of leopard in the Lydenburg area. Part of this project is to scour over 80,000 ha of land in the hope of confirming the existence of the famed black leopard. Numerous sightings have already been reported in recent years and MPB officials have reason to believe that this elusive animal does exist in greater numbers than is commonly believed.
Bill and Carol will donate funds to Baobab to assist in purchasing another GPS collar to be used in the project.
Bill and Carol have already been instrumental in the purchase of and development of a satellite tracking collar which has been monitoring the movement and condition of a big cat via a GPS locator and cellular link. The system enables one to monitor the leopard via a web link, which keeps them in touch on a day to day basis. It is hoped that this system will allow schools, universities etc to become involved in vital research on the big cat in this area.
We at Baobab salute Bill and Carol. We believe it is the stories of people like them that will inspire others to grow our conservation story that is necessary to save our natural world. We wish them well on their exciting adventure.
